Tutorial: Baby Booties

From squares to booties in five easy steps

For new knitters, knitting can be discouraging. Especially when those squares upon squares don’t really amount to much in and of themselves. Whether learning yourself, or helping to find ways to encourage others, this is a project that I myself have used to teach others how to knit with a sense of accomplishment. Last year, I had the opportunity to teach my mom’s midwife’s daughter how to knit. Her sister just had a baby, and she wanted to knit something for it. So I taught her to knit these baby booties, and she loved them! I just love it when young knitters are excited to knit for others!

The materials used for this are:
One skein of cotton yarn
A pair of knitting needles
One tapestry needle

Step 1: Knit a square. The width should be big enough to go around the baby’s foot comfortably. The height should be long enough for the baby’s foot.

Step 2: Fold the square in half, and sew up one side (the white side for instance)

Step 3: Gather the other side (the blue for instance)

Step 4: Turn it inside out, and sew about halfway up the third side (the side with all the colors for instance)

This leaves a little hole for the foot to slide in.

Step 5: Weave in all the ends and you’re done! Just make sure to make another one for the other foot!

Then make a whole bunch of them!

Have fun!
